Packaging that elevates the product
Markus & Markus, renowned for their delicious stroopwafels, sought a more sophisticated and visually appealing way to package their leftover crumbs. In their search for a new packaging solution, they found Bandall. After an initial introduction to our account manager, Hester, and a successful product test in De Meern, interest quickly turned into action, and the project took off.
From leftover to brand opportunity
When stroopwafels are baked and cut into their signature round shape, crispy edges remain behind, far too delicious to throw away. Recognizing their value, Markus & Markus decided to package and sell these. However, their existing packaging solution presented several challenges.
The leftover pieces of the stroopwafels were packed in a plastic tub with a simple label. Functional? Yes. Inspiring? Not quite. On the shelf, the product barely stood out. The presentation didn’t reflect the premium quality or the strong brand identity that Markus & Markus are known for.
There was also a practical issue. If the containers fell over during handling or transport, the lid could pop open, causing spillage, product loss, and unnecessary mess.
Markus & Markus needed a solution that would:
- Elevate shelf appeal
- Strengthen brand presentation
- Securely seal the lid to prevent waste
- Maintain product visibility
Smart banding, stronger branding
Bandall delivered the perfect solution with branding by banding. This concept combines printed banding material for powerful brand communication with a banding machine that applies the band precisely around each package.
The printed band transformed the simple container into a visually appealing, recognizable brand product. Instead of a basic label, the banding material is tightly wrapped around the packaging, creating a premium shelf presence while keeping the delicious stroopwafel crumbs clearly visible. The transparency of the container and the view of the product remain fully intact, an essential factor for treats like this.
At the same time, the banding material functions as a seal. Even if a container tips over, the lid stays firmly in place. The recurring issue of product loss and mess was completely resolved, significantly improving reliability during handling and transport.
An added advantage lies in the banding machine itself. Equipped with advanced positioning technology, it ensures every band is applied and sealed in exactly the right spot. All design elements align perfectly, resulting in a consistent, professional presentation across every package.
More than packaging: Added value at every level
The new packaging offers far more than improved appeal and functionality.
Retailers now view the packaging as a high-quality, well-thought-out solution. The strong seal and premium appearance create greater shelf impact and increased confidence in the product.
Consumers have also responded enthusiastically to the refreshed look and improved quality perception. The success of the banding solution has been so convincing that Markus & Markus now use it for other products in their range, further strengthening brand consistency.
Built on strong collaboration
A key success factor in this project was the close collaboration with Max Aarts, supplier of the banding material. Markus & Markus highly valued the joint development process, from refining the print design to advising on critical aspects of material performance and compatibility with the plastic container. This collaborative approach ensured an optimal balance between aesthetics, functionality, and quality.
A small band, a big impact
With Bandall’s banding solution, Markus & Markus successfully transformed their stroopwafel leftovers into a commercially attractive and professionally packaged product.
What was once a simple container with a label is now a secure, visually compelling packaging solution appreciated by retailers and loved by consumers. By combining branding, visibility, sealing, and precision positioning technology into one smart system, this project proves that intelligent packaging can elevate not only the product itself but also the perception of it, while creating a positive social impact along the way.
