Banding
What is banding?
Banding is a packaging solution in which one or more products are securely wrapped with a printed or unprinted band made of paper or film. This technique offers an efficient and sustainable way to bundle products in a tamper-evident manner, while also providing strong opportunities for brand visibility.
How does banding work?
When banding, a band is wrapped around a product and tightened, so that the band sits firmly around the product.
The process consists of three steps:
- Depending on the type of machine, products are placed manually or automatically in the banding arch.
- The machine applies a paper or film band around the product.
- The packaged product is removed from the machine, either manually or automatically.
For which products is banding suitable?
Banding is a versatile packaging solution that is suitable for various product categories, including:
- Food products
- Graphic products and cardboard
- Pharmaceutical and cosmetic items
- Textile products

Can a band replace alternative packaging forms?
Yes, in many cases a band can replace shrink film, labels, or sleeves. With less material and energy usage, lower maintenance costs, and a better appearance.
Can I apply bands without glue?
Yes, Bandall uses a glue-free technology, making the method product-friendly and clean.
What is the difference between continuous and positioned banding, and which option best fits my situation?
- Continuous banding is perfect if you are looking for a simple, cost-effective way to make your brand visible. Your design, such as a logo or slogan, is repeated in a specific way across the entire ban. This works very well for general branding or promotions where repetition draws attention.
- Positioned banding is suitable when you want each band to be placed in exactly the same spot in relation to the circumference of your product, for example with your logo neatly at the front and product information at the back. This method uses an automatic positioning system to achieve this with precision.
What is the difference between banding and stretch wrap/shrink wrap?
Banding uses one or more bands that wrap around the product. Stretch wrap and shrink wrap enclose the entire product and require much more packaging material and energy (for example, for shrinking).
As a result, banding is more environmentally friendly, faster to process, and ensures a tighter, cleaner presentation of your product.
What is the difference between banding and strapping?
Banding is a way to bundle products with a paper or film band. Strapping uses strong plastic strapping bands and is intended for securing (heavy) loads during transport. Since strapping materials are often much thicker than a band, they can cause dents or other damage to the product. With banding, this is not the case: the method is completely damage-free.
How can banding help to comply with the PPWR?
Banding reduces the use of packaging material. In addition, bands are highly recyclable and contribute to more efficient waste streams because they consist of a single type of material and no glue is used. This fits well with the objectives of the PPWR to minimize packaging and promote recycling.

Can I band different products with one machine?
Yes, Bandall machines are flexible and can be easily adjusted for different product sizes and band widths.
What is Bandall's vacuum feed system?
Using air suction, the banding material is smoothly guided through the machine and the arch. This prevents the material from shifting or jamming, keeping malfunctions to a minimum.
Why do Bandall machines have the longest lifespan?
Our unique feed system plays an important role in extending the lifespan. Thanks to air suction, friction is kept to a minimum, which means that essential parts hardly wear out. Less wear results in years of reliable production.
Why does Bandall have the fastest banding machines on the market?
We understand how important speed is in the packaging industry. That’s why we build machines with multiple heads. By adding one or more extra heads to a banding machine, you can multiply the output. We have built machines with up to six heads, proving that we can meet any packaging demand.
What is the difference between Bandall’s Stand Alone and automatic banding machines?
With Stand Alone machines, products are usually placed manually into the arch. Our automatic machines operate fully automatically with infeed and outfeed via conveyor belts. These are often integrated into existing production lines.
I have a unique product, can you band it?
We always look for the best possible solution for your product and requirements. When necessary, we supply customized banding machines that are fully tailored to the shape, dimensions, and specific characteristics of your product. Together, we fine-tune the machine and thoroughly test the settings.
Materials
How are bands supplied?
Bands are supplied on rolls (up to 2,900m in length), allowing them to be easily and quickly applied around products by the machine. This is also efficient for storage and transport.
Is a band recyclable?
Both paper and film bands are fully recyclable.
Can I have a band made with my own design? And can I also add variable data?
Yes, both are possible, and it is important to understand the difference:
- Pre-printed bands: These are supplied on rolls, already featuring your own design.
- Printing variable data: Bandall machines can be equipped with an integrated printer that adds variable information during the banding process. Think of barcodes, expiry dates, serial numbers, or product information. This data is printed in high quality directly onto the band, whether pre-printed or unprinted.
What band sizes are possible?
Bandall machines process bands in various widths, ranging from 20 mm to 150 mm, depending on the product and application. The length of the band is determined by the dimensions of your product.
